Heartfelt new baby wishes for a new mom in your own words — for a first baby, from her mom, from her sister, and for the card that goes with a gift

Somewhere between the group text and the fourth casserole, the messages start to blur together: congratulations, so happy for you, he is perfect. Every one of them is kind and none of them is about her. What a new mom still remembers a year later is the message that saw her — that named the enormous thing she just did, asked nothing back, and did not need a reply to feel finished. What follows is longer messages, four to six sentences, written the way you would say them out loud and sorted by who you are to her: a first baby, a second or third, a note from a close friend, one from her mom, one from her sister, the card that goes in the bag with a gift, and the ones for when the start has been hard. Most get better if you trade one line for something only the two of you would recognize.

For a first baby

1

Nobody hands you a manual along with the baby, and the people who act like they got one are making it up as they go. You will learn her in your own time, the way you learn any person worth knowing. I am not worried about you for a single second. Sending you all my love.

2

Everything is new today, including you. That is a strange thing to carry, and you are carrying it anyway. Whatever this first week ends up looking like, it counts as doing it right. I am so glad he is here, and I am thinking about you more than about him.

3

There is a version of you from before this morning and a version from after, and I would pick either one out of a crowd. Take your time meeting the new one. She has a lot to say and no hurry at all about saying it. All my love to the three of you.

4

I have started this four times and stopped, because nothing I write is big enough for what happened to your family. So here is the small true version instead. He is lucky, you are enough, and I am not going anywhere.

5

First babies come with a lot of noise from other people. Let most of it go straight past you. You already know things about her that nobody else in the world knows, and that turns out to be the part that matters. Wishing you a soft first month.

6

Welcome to the world, little one. You have arrived in the middle of the strangest and best week your mother will ever have, and she has been ready for you longer than she will admit. So much love to you both from all of us.

For a second or third

1

Second babies get fewer cards, and that has never made any sense to me. What you are doing right now is harder than the first time around, and you are somehow making it look ordinary. None of it is ordinary. Congratulations, twice as loudly this time.

2

You already know what you are doing, which is exactly why nobody thinks to ask how you are. So I am asking, and I am asking properly. There is no right answer and no version I would rather hear. Sending love to all four of you, and extra to you.

3

Somewhere in that house there is a kid who just got demoted and a baby who has no idea, and you are holding the two of them together. That is a lot to ask of anyone. You are good at it, and you should not have to be.

4

A third one. I have officially run out of ways to be impressed by you, so here is the plain version. Your kids are lucky, and the reason that is true is you. Wishing you a few easy weeks and somebody else doing the dishes for once.

5

The house got louder and the room in your heart stayed the same size and still fits everybody. I have never understood how that works, and you have now done it three times. Congratulations to the whole crew, and much love to the one holding it upright.

6

No advice from me, since you have done this before and I have not done it at all. Only this. I saw you at the end of the last one, and you came through it. You will come through this one too, on your own schedule. So happy for your family.

From a close friend

1

I have known you a long time and I have never once heard you sound the way you sounded on the phone this morning. Whatever you need from me, name it, and if you cannot name it I will guess and show up anyway. She is beautiful, and so is her mother.

2

There is a whole line of people who want to hold him. I am in it, and I can wait. What I would rather do first is bring food, put it in the fridge, and leave without making you talk to me. I am so happy for you it is honestly embarrassing.

3

You have been my friend through a decade of things that did not go the way we planned, and now there is this. I have been grinning at my phone since your message came in. Call me at any hour of any night and I will pick up.

4

I am not going to ask how you are doing every single day, because that gets old fast. I am going to keep showing up quietly instead. Congratulations on your daughter, and on becoming the person she gets to have.

5

Out of everyone I know, you are the one I would have picked for this. Not because you will be perfect at it, but because you are kind at three in the morning, which is the part nobody puts on a card. So much love to the little one who got very lucky.

6

Nothing about you needs to change for you to be good at this, and I hope nobody spends the next month telling you otherwise. You already know how to love somebody stubbornly. Welcome to the world, kid. Your mom happens to be my favorite person alive.

From her mom

1

I watched you become somebody’s mother today and I do not have words that hold it. I remember exactly what you weighed at that size, and the shape of your head against my arm. Now you are the one doing the holding. I am proud of you beyond anything I can write.

2

You are going to do this differently than I did, and you should. Whatever you keep from the way you were raised, keep it because you chose it and not because it is what we happened to do. I love you more than I know how to say, and I love her already.

3

My whole life I have had one job I cared about more than the others, and today you started yours. I am here for every part of it you want me in, and cheerfully absent from the parts you do not. All you have to do is say which is which. My love, always.

4

Nobody warned me that watching my child hold her child would knock the wind clean out of me. It did, and I have been sitting with it all afternoon. Congratulations, my girl. You are going to be wonderful at this, and the truth is you already are.

5

I wanted to write you something wise and all I have is this. You were an easy person to love from the very first hour, and now you know how that feels from the other side. I will come Thursday if you want me there.

6

You are going to hear a great deal this week about what you ought to be doing. Here is mine, and then I will stop. Trust yourself sooner than I trusted myself. So much love to you and to him.

From her sister

1

We shared a room for eleven years and I still cannot believe somebody let you have a person of your own. Joke aside, you were always the one who noticed when somebody needed something before they said it. He gets to grow up inside that.

2

I have been your sister longer than I have been anything else, and today you took on a job I cannot help with. So I will take the older one to the park on Saturday and ask you nothing when I bring her back. I am already in love with the new one.

3

Everybody is going to tell you that you look great and that it goes by fast. From me you get the honest version instead. Text me at four in the morning, I am awake anyway, and whatever this month turns out to be, you never have to perform any of it for me.

4

You have been somebody’s big sister since you were three years old, so as far as I am concerned this is a promotion with worse hours. Congratulations, seriously. I have never been prouder to be related to you, and I intend to be unbearable about being an aunt.

5

I do not know how to write this without crying, so it is going to be short. You did an enormous thing this week. I have watched you do hard things our entire lives and I have never seen you do one like this. Tell me when to come and I will be on the road.

6

Mom is going to send you something long and beautiful, and you should keep it. This is the version from the person who knows what you are genuinely like, and I still think you are going to be great at this. Welcome, small one. Your mother is a force of nature.

For the card that goes with a gift

1

Whatever is in the bag will be outgrown by spring, so the part worth keeping is this card. You did something enormous this month, and most of the mail you get is going to skip straight past that fact. I am not skipping it. Congratulations, and please rest.

2

Half of this is for him and half of it is for you. Every person who walks through your door is going to look at the baby first. I looked at you first, and I plan to keep doing that.

3

I brought something small because turning up empty-handed felt wrong, but the gift is not the message. The message is that you are doing a hard thing well and somebody said so out loud instead of just thinking it. Congratulations to your whole family.

4

There is no instruction card in the box because I could not find one that fit. Use it, lose it, hand it on to somebody else. What I would like you to keep instead is the sentence, so here it is plainly. You are already the mother she needs. All my love.

5

This comes with a promise attached. Whatever is in the box is the small half of it. The large half is an afternoon of your choosing, whenever the fog lifts, with no talking required and nothing on the schedule. Welcome to the newest one, and congratulations.

6

Cards get saved and boxes do not, so here is the line worth saving. On the hardest day of the next year, somebody wrote this down and meant every word of it. You are doing beautifully, and it is allowed to be hard at the same time.

When the start has been hard

1

This has not gone the way it was supposed to, and I am not going to dress that up for you. You do not owe anybody an update or a brave face, mine included. I am here every day for as long as this takes. None of it changes what I think of you.

2

I am not going to ask how it is going. I am telling you that I am around, that dinner will be at your door Tuesday whether or not you answer it, and that you can text me a single word and I will understand what it means. Thinking about you both constantly.

3

Some beginnings are quiet and frightening instead of loud and happy, and that does not make you any less her mother. You have been there for every hour of this, including the ones nobody else saw. She knows. Sending you strength and no expectations at all.

4

You are allowed to feel several things at once right now, and not one of them is the wrong thing to feel. Whatever today was, you got through it. I will check in tomorrow and you never have to answer me. All my love to your family.

5

I kept writing sentences and deleting them because I did not want to say the wrong thing, and then it occurred to me that silence is the wrong thing. So here it is. I am not going anywhere, and I would like you to ask me for things rather than manage me.

6

However long this takes, it takes, and nobody is keeping score. Nobody is waiting on a photo either. When you want to talk I am here, and when you do not, I am still here. Much love to you and to your son.

What people ask before they write

Her mom, her sister and her closest friend are all writing this week. How do three messages avoid saying the same thing?

Split them by what only you can see. A mother has the before: what this daughter was like at that same size, what she does when she is frightened and pretending not to be. A sister has the private record: the shared room, the running joke, the thing neither of you has ever told anybody. A close friend has the adult version the family never gets to see, the phone calls at odd hours and the years that did not go to plan. If each of you writes from the part of her life only you were present for, the three cannot collide. The one thing worth settling in advance is who says the big sentence, because two people calling her brave on the same day sounds arranged.

She is reading this one-handed at three in the morning. Does a longer message still work, or should it be two lines?

Length is not the problem; front-loading is. A tired reader takes in the first sentence and the last one, and the middle arrives later or not at all, so put the thing you came to say at one end or the other rather than buried in the third clause. Four to six sentences read fine at that hour as long as none of them contains a question, a plan, or anything that needs answering — what exhausts her is not the word count but the reply it seems to demand. Say plainly that no answer is needed, and mean it. It also helps to send it once and leave it alone. A second message asking whether she saw the first turns a gift into an obligation.

The baby arrived through adoption or surrogacy, or after a very long wait. Which of these words still fit?

Almost all of them, with one adjustment: take out anything that describes the birth or the body, and keep everything that describes the mother. Lines about the enormous thing she just did, about being enough, about learning this person in her own time belong to her regardless of how the baby got here. What lands badly is the language of surprise, the sense that this happened to her suddenly, when she may have been working toward it for years through paperwork, waiting rooms and decisions nobody was told about. Naming the length of the road is usually welcome; naming its details is not. She is the mother from day one, and the wording should assume that without announcing it.

This is her second or third. Should the message mention the older kids at all?

Mention them, and mention them as people rather than as a complication. The version that lands shows you have kept track — that the older one is at the age where everything is a negotiation, that he has been telling the whole street about this for a month. The version that stings is any variation on now you have your hands full, which she has already heard nine times and which turns her children into a workload. There is also a real thing almost nobody says: later arrivals get a fraction of the attention, and the mother is the one quietly absorbing the difference. Writing that you noticed is worth more than another congratulations.

She has asked for no visitors and nothing posted online. What belongs in the message then?

The request is the most useful information you have been given, so let the message show it was heard. Say that you are not coming by, that nothing is going near a feed, and that neither of those is a disappointment you are being gracious about — otherwise she spends energy she does not have reassuring you. Then write exactly what you would have written anyway. A boundary about visitors is not a boundary about warmth, and going cool and formal because she drew a line reads as a small punishment. Tell her the offer stands with no expiration, and then do not raise it again. The people she remembers are the ones who took the first no as an answer.
