Houston has had this name in its flower trade since 1943. Breen’s Florist is the shop you use when the delivery has to land — a hospital room in the Medical Center, a funeral home across the county line, a homecoming mum that has to be finished by Friday.
What to order here — and for which occasion
The everyday work is the full spread: birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, thank-yous, get-well flowers, the apology that has to arrive before the argument cools.
The Texas specialty is homecoming. Breen’s builds mums in single, double and triple sizes, layered with streamers, braids and school ribbons and finished with bears or charms, plus garters for the boys and corsages and boutonnieres for the dance. A mum, the shop says, is too personal to sell properly online: you call or come in, talk through the school, the colors and the size, and it is made for that student.
Weddings run through the separate wedding arm, from ceremony flowers to reception pieces; corporate and hotel work is routine. Sympathy and funeral arrangements are a standing part of the business, with deliveries to funeral homes across the metro every day.
Delivery and how fast it moves
Same-day delivery covers Greater Houston and Pasadena, hand-delivered rather than shipped in a box, and the shop publishes its list: more than a hundred hospitals across Houston and the surrounding counties, from the Texas Medical Center out to Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands and Conroe, plus funeral homes, cemeteries, hotels, restaurants, wedding venues and event centers.
In the city with the largest medical district on earth, a florist running those routes daily knows which lobby takes deliveries and which floors will not accept glass. The same-day cutoff is not published, so if it has to arrive today, call rather than click — and before Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, call earlier than seems necessary.
Pickup works at all three stores, the fastest route if you are already driving. From June through September ask for the earliest slot, because an August doorstep ruins a bouquet fast.
What makes it stand out
- Since 1943. Eight decades in the same trade in the same city, through several owners.
- Three stores, one operation. West Houston, the northwest suburbs and Pasadena — how same-day delivery covers this much of the metro without a courier app.
- A published hospital list. Over a hundred facilities including the Texas Medical Center, served daily.
- Homecoming mums built to order. Single, double and triple, with school ribbons, charms and garters, made by conversation rather than by checkout.
- A separate wedding arm. Event work run as its own operation, not squeezed between counter orders.
- Outside recognition. A Better Business Bureau Award for Excellence from 2022.
Where the flowers come from
The shop does not publish suppliers or a buying calendar, so there is no verified supply chain to describe. The one stated principle covers Designer’s Choice work: by the shop’s own account it is built from what is in season and farm-fresh that week.
The shop, the service and what else is on the shelves
The Houston store is a working retail florist — cooler, counter and workroom in one place, staff who design rather than pack. Orders come online, by phone or in person; for anything custom — a mum, a wedding, a large sympathy piece — the shop steers you toward a conversation.
Alongside cut flowers there are green and blooming plants, gift baskets and add-ons: the hospital room where a plant outlives a bouquet, the office gift. Owner Marcia Wilson came into the business after her father bought the shop in 1986 — an engineer whose answer to knowing nothing about flowers was reportedly “I’ll learn” — and together they grew one store into three.
When to come and how to get there
The main store sits in west Houston, in Spring Branch between Memorial City and the Galleria, easy to reach from the west-side neighborhoods and the loop. The other two are in Copperfield to the northwest and Pasadena to the southeast, which matters when you choose where to pick up.
Autumn belongs to homecoming, and because mums are made to order, late September and early October go to students who planned ahead. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are the two heaviest days of the year. Weddings fall in spring and autumn, since Houston summer ceremonies mostly move indoors, and hospital deliveries are a weekday matter more often than not.
Questions and answers
Can they deliver to a Texas Medical Center hospital today?
The Medical Center is on the shop’s daily list. Call for a same-day run: no cutoff is published, and hospitals add timing rules of their own.
How far ahead should I order a homecoming mum?
As early as you can: each mum is made for one student, by phone or in person, so the last week before the dance is too late to start.
Do they do weddings, and how early should I book?
Through the separate wedding arm. Spring and autumn dates in Houston go months in advance, so book the consultation well before the season.
What if I need a funeral piece on short notice?
Funeral home deliveries run daily, so this is routine. Call with the name of the home and the time of the service and ask what can still be built that day.
What if I do not know what to order?
Ask for designer’s choice: you set the occasion, and the arrangement is built from what is in season that week.
How do I judge freshness at pickup?
Buds should feel firm under light pressure, stems cleanly cut, leaves green to the edge with no dry brown rims — pickup is the one moment you can check for yourself.
Do they deliver to the suburbs?
Yes — past the city limits to Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Conroe and Pasadena.
