The Texas specialty is homecoming. Breen’s builds mums in single, double and triple sizes, layered with streamers, braids and school ribbons and finished with bears or charms, plus garters for the boys and corsages and boutonnieres for the dance. A mum, the shop says, is too personal to sell properly online: you call or come in, talk through the school, the colors and the size, and it is made for that student.

Weddings run through the separate wedding arm, from ceremony flowers to reception pieces; corporate and hotel work is routine. Sympathy and funeral arrangements are a standing part of the business, with deliveries to funeral homes across the metro every day.

Same-day delivery covers Greater Houston and Pasadena, hand-delivered rather than shipped in a box, and the shop publishes its list: more than a hundred hospitals across Houston and the surrounding counties, from the Texas Medical Center out to Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands and Conroe, plus funeral homes, cemeteries, hotels, restaurants, wedding venues and event centers.

In the city with the largest medical district on earth, a florist running those routes daily knows which lobby takes deliveries and which floors will not accept glass.
