A correction to what is often assumed about city parks here: unlike almost every other Houston Parks and Recreation site, Lake Houston Wilderness Park charges a modest day-use entrance fee per person, with young children admitted free. No advance booking is needed for day use, but camping, cabins, shelters and group lodges are reserved and paid separately, and an overnight booking does not cover the day-use entry. The park is open daily; the nature center runs shorter hours several days a week. Pets are welcome in tent camping areas and on the grounds but are not allowed inside cabins. Allow half a day for trails, a full weekend if you are staying over.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the best of the four seasons here \u2014 dogwood and wildflowers in the understory, migrating songbirds moving through the creek bottoms, and temperatures that make twenty miles of trail feasible. Summer is hot, humid and heavy with insects; go early, carry far more water than feels necessary, and treat the creeks as the main attraction. Autumn brings the hardwood bottoms into color and the most comfortable camping weather of the year, with cool nights and dry trails. Winter is quiet and underrated: the trails are empty, the leafless bottomland opens up sightlines for wildlife, and the cabins with heat make it perfectly practical to stay over when the rest of the state has stopped camping.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This ground has changed hands repeatedly. It was first held by a timber company, then in part by the Girl Scouts \u2014 the San Jacinto Girl Scouts ran the Peach Creek Girl Scout Ranch here, and the city&#8217;s records show a 202-acre parcel of that camp acquired in 1990. The larger property operated as Lake Houston State Park under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department before being transferred to the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department in 2006 and renamed Lake Houston Wilderness Park. The Joe Turner Nature Center opened in 2007. The most consequential recent chapter has been water: Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019 both did serious damage to buildings, trails and utilities, and the rebuilding was deliberately done differently \u2014 historic Girl Scout ranch structures including Lazy Creek Lodge and the Forest Cottage were converted into screened facilities designed to survive the next flood rather than be destroyed by it.
