There is no rail option: the METRORail system does not extend into this quadrant of the city, and the Red, Green and Purple lines all terminate many miles away, so effectively everyone drives. Entry is free and so is the parking. Hours are seasonal \u2014 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from March through October, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. from November through February \u2014 and overnight parking is not tolerated, with vehicles towed. Alcohol is banned except by permit, glass containers are prohibited outright, and pets must be leashed anywhere outside the dog park. Allow half a day if you are fishing or grilling; two hours is enough to walk a loop and see the lake. On the climate: June through September brings highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit with dew points near 75, and here there is no downtown shade or building cover \u2014 the open fields and the pier are genuinely exposed. Mosquitoes are worse than in central Houston because this is riverine bottomland at the foot of the San Jacinto watershed; dawn and dusk near the pond and the lake edge are unbearable without repellent from April into November. Lake Houston is part of an East Texas river system where alligators live, so keep dogs leashed and children away from the water&#8217;s edge at quiet ends of the shoreline.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Late winter and early spring bring the white bass run up the San Jacinto and its tributaries, and the piers get busy with people who know exactly why they are there. Spring proper is green, humid and thunderstorm-prone, with the picnic pavilions booked out for weekend gatherings. Summer is the park at its hardest \u2014 the mown fields bake, the trails are best walked before eight in the morning, and the lake breeze on the pier is the only cooling that works. Fall, from mid-October onward, is the season this park deserves: dry air, comfortable water temperatures, migrating birds moving down the flyway, and long low light on the reservoir in the late afternoon. Winter is mild, mostly empty and excellent for waterfowl watching, with occasional hard freezes.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Alexander Deussen (1882\u20131959) was born in San Antonio to a banking family of German and English descent. He took a bachelor&#8217;s degree in 1903 and a master&#8217;s in 1904 at the University of Texas at Austin, taught geology there for roughly a decade, and served as an assistant geologist with the United States Geological Survey from 1907 to 1915. In 1921 he brought in an oil well in the Mexia district \u2014 the first of the fault-controlled fields of East Texas \u2014 and in 1924 he directed the first seismic survey conducted on the Gulf and established an early laboratory for Gulf Coast sediment research. He was the second president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in 1918\u201319 and received its Sidney Powers Memorial Medal in 1947. The land gift is recorded two ways and the discrepancy is worth knowing: Harris County Precinct One states that Deussen donated 309 acres on Lake Houston to the county in 1956, while the Handbook of Texas records a 200-acre donation in 1954. The lake itself was brand new at the time \u2014 dam construction started in November 1951 and finished in December 1953, deliberate impoundment began on April 9, 1954, and the Ambursen-type structure runs 12,100 feet long and 66 feet high, holding a surface of roughly 12,240 acres at spillway crest. The reservoir is owned by the City of Houston and operated by the Coastal Water Authority. Now the correction that matters most: for nearly forty years this park kept a bison herd, and it is still the first thing longtime Houstonians mention. The animals were rounded up and trucked to Medicine Mounds Ranch in Hardeman County in North Texas during the catastrophic 2011 Texas drought, in a relocation sponsored by the Summerlee Foundation. The county had been spending about $8,500 a year on their care as feed and hay costs climbed, and the park itself lost roughly a thousand trees to the same drought. Paul Mauricio of Precinct One said at the time that the ground had almost no grass left and that the bison would not be returning in his lifetime. Plenty of tourism listings still promise &#8220;a herd of buffalo&#8221; here; they are more than a decade out of date. Finally, the water: this park sits on the shoreline of a reservoir at the bottom of the San Jacinto watershed. Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 pushed the entire system into record flood, and the Lake Houston area flooded again in May 2024 at levels that surpassed Tropical Storm Imelda for hundreds of property owners. Dredging since Harvey has removed more than four million cubic yards of silt from Lake Houston and its tributaries, while upstream sand mining keeps sending sediment back down. After a serious rain, expect low ground, ramps and pier approaches to be closed, submerged or knee-deep in mud.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Reserve a pavilion through the Precinct One portal if you are bringing a group \u2014 on spring and fall weekends the covered shelters are claimed early and there is no informal way to hold one.<\/li>\n<li>Check lake conditions and recent rainfall before driving out for the ramps or the pier; after heavy rain in the San Jacinto watershed, the shoreline facilities are the first thing to go under.<\/li>\n<li>Do not plan your trip around the bison. The METRORail network does not reach this part of northeast Houston, and the park is designed around car access with free lots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I bring a dog?<\/strong> Yes. There is a fenced dog park, and dogs must be leashed everywhere else on the property.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can we hold a family party here?<\/strong> Yes \u2014 fourteen covered pavilions with grills and picnic tables can be reserved through the Precinct One community portal. Alcohol requires a permit and glass containers are banned entirely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does the park flood?<\/strong> The lakeside portions do. It sits at the bottom of the San Jacinto watershed on a reservoir shoreline; Harvey in 2017 and the May 2024 floods both hit this area hard, and ramps and low ground are closed or submerged after
