Levy Park is the rare Houston green space where something scheduled happens almost every day of the year, and where nearly all of it costs nothing to attend.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The tree house and boardwalk<\/strong> \u2014 a 150-foot elevated platform, built to ADA standards, threaded between legacy live oaks roughly 40 to 70 years old that the design team refused to cut down.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The rain garden<\/strong> \u2014 7,500 square feet engineered to catch and slow stormwater, a pointed gesture in a city whose defining civic problem is runoff.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Children&#8217;s Garden<\/strong> \u2014 about 40,000 square feet built around a berm slide, a climbing wall and a rain-shower fountain that kids run through fully dressed from May to September.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The performance pavilion<\/strong> \u2014 a 2,500-square-foot multipurpose stage; the lawn in front of it has been programmed for crowds of around 3,000.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The event lawn and games strip<\/strong> \u2014 roughly 43,000 square feet of turf edged by table tennis, foosball, a putting green and chess and checkers tables.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Two dog parks<\/strong> \u2014 separate runs for small and large dogs, a deliberate correction of the crowding that ruins single-run dog parks elsewhere in the city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_inside\"><\/span>What&#8217;s inside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The 2016 reconstruction by the Office of James Burnett, with Natalye Appel + Associates Architects, treated the surviving oaks as fixed points and built everything else around them. The result is a compact park with an unusually high density of things to do, all of it laced together by one continuous walking loop.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A promenade that circles the entire perimeter and doubles as the park&#8217;s jogging route.<\/li>\n<li>A community garden of raised beds used for demonstration planting and school education.<\/li>\n<li>An observation deck looking out over the planted beds and the garden below.<\/li>\n<li>A reading area under a shade arbor, served by carts that put out books, newspapers, board games and art supplies.<\/li>\n<li>Three built-in food and drink locations, including a kiosk beside the dog park and a full restaurant space; chef Tim Love&#8217;s Woodshed Smokehouse and Love Shack arrived in 2020, and the same structures now house Hearsay and Gaspacho&#8217;s Mexican Bites.<\/li>\n<li>Restrooms, plus a parking garage inside the office building that shares the block.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>What to do and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Families with toddlers<\/strong> \u2014 the boardwalk carries strollers and wheelchairs, so the play area is reachable without anyone being lifted over a curb.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Office workers on a break<\/strong> \u2014 free boot camp, yoga with mats supplied, tai chi and Zumba run on a published weekly schedule.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dog owners<\/strong> \u2014 two fenced runs mean a nervous small dog is never sharing turf with a boisterous retriever.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concert and film audiences<\/strong> \u2014 the Conservancy books live music, dance programs with METdance and outdoor screenings on the event lawn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>School groups and curious kids<\/strong> \u2014 Houston Public Library story hours and Houston Museum of Natural Science lunar and planetary sessions are regular fixtures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People who want to eat outside<\/strong> \u2014 food trucks work the weekend, alongside the permanent kitchens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_and_practicalities\"><\/span>Getting there and practicalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park sits in the Upper Kirby District, the dense commercial wedge between Montrose, Greenway Plaza and River Oaks. There is no METRORail station within walking distance; the Red Line&#8217;s closest stops are in the Museum District, roughly two miles east, so most visitors arrive by car, by METRO local bus, or on foot from the surrounding towers. Admission is free and the park opens daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Park in the garage of the adjoining office building; kerbside space on the residential edges is limited and contested. Allow 45 minutes to walk the loop and read the signage, two to three hours with children, longer if you come for a scheduled class or concert. From June through September expect highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit with dew points near 75 and heat index readings above 105 \u2014 between about 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. the oak canopy and the shade arbor are the only genuine relief, and the splash fountain is not decorative but functional. Mosquitoes are a year-round Houston reality and are worst around dusk near the rain garden and the planted beds; repellent is sensible from April through November.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the park&#8217;s best-looking season: the live oaks drop their old leaves and flush new ones in late February and March, pollen coats every bench for a fortnight, and the community garden beds fill out before the heat arrives. Summer turns the park into a morning-and-evening place \u2014 the lawn is unusable at midday, but the splash fountain, the shaded boardwalk and the after-dark concerts carry it. Fall, from mid-October, is when Houston stops apologizing for its weather: dry north winds, comfortable evenings and the busiest run of outdoor programming. Winter is mild and green, with live oaks holding their leaves and the lawn still usable, punctuated by the occasional hard freeze of the kind that scorched landscaping across the region in February 2021.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Houston philanthropist Leon Levy gave the land in 1941, and the tract was formally deeded to the city in 1952. For decades the resulting park, about 5.2 acres, offered a public swimming pool and a ball field used by neighborhood recreation leagues, and little else; by the 2000s the pool was derelict and the park was a place people drove past. The Upper Kirby Redevelopment Authority, working with the Upper Kirby District Foundation, launched the full rebuild in 2015 after roughly two decades of stalled planning. Burton Construction carried out the $15 million reconstruction through 2016; the design came from the Office of James Burnett and Natalye Appel + Associates Architects, with Bryant Park in New York cited by the team as the operating model \u2014 a small park saved by relentless programming rather than by size. Mayor Sylvester Turner cut the ribbon on February 25, 2017. In October 2018 the Urban Land Institute named Levy Park a winner of its Urban Open Space Award, an honor it shared that year with a project in Madrid. Day-to-day operation belongs to the Levy Park Conservancy, an affiliate of the Upper Kirby District Foundation; early reporting after the reopening put weekly attendance near 10,000. A caution about the trees: the derecho that crossed Houston on May 16, 2024 with winds approaching 100 mph, followed by Hurricane Beryl on July 8, cost the city a devastating share of its mature canopy, and parks across Houston were still clearing and replanting more than a year later. At Levy the old oaks are not decoration \u2014 they are the structure the boardwalk is built through.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the Conservancy&#8217;s calendar before coming: the difference between an empty lawn and a live band with several hundred people on it is one line on a schedule.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a change of clothes for children. The original park deeded to the city was roughly 5.2 acres; the 2016 rebuild squared up the boundaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I bring a dog?<\/strong> Yes, and there are two fenced dog parks \u2014 one for small dogs, one for large. Dogs must be leashed everywhere else in the park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers?<\/strong> Yes.
